Osteoarthritis knee pain significantly improved with Green-Lipped Mussel Extract
New research demonstrates green-lipped mussel extract significantly improves knee joint pain in patients with osteoarthritis (OA), with no gastro-intestinal side effects.
Researchers from the Centre for Integrative Clinical and Molecular Medicine, School of Medicine, The University of Queensland and The Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane, QLD, Australia, investigated the efficacy of a New Zealand green-lipped mussel (GLM) extract in patients diagnosed with OA of the knee. Twenty-one subjects diagnosed with knee OA were given a GLM extract for eight weeks. They were assessed both prior to and after eight weeks using the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities osteoarthritis index, as well as a self-administered questionnaire, and the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS) tools. The results of these tests showed GLM significantly improved knee joint pain, stiffness and mobility. GLM extract also significantly improved GI symptoms by 49% in the OA patients. This was an additional significant finding because traditional analgesic medications used to treat OA are known to cause unpleasant GI issues.
