Are Fish Oil Supplements Safer Than Eating Fish?

Written by OmegaXL on May 9, 2014

The American Heart Association currently recommends that healthy adults eat fish (particularly fatty cold water fish) at least 2 times a week. The FDA recommends that consumers not exceed more than a total of 3 grams per day of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids, with no more than 2 grams per day from a dietary supplement. In heeding that advise, Americans are eating more fish than ever before. While the benefits of fish and fish oil are well substantiated, consumers are growing concerned about contaminants.

Across the globe, toxic chemicals continue to proliferate in the environment, and traces of man-made pollutants have been found in nearly all tests of animal tissues in our food supply. With all the negative clinical findings concerning mercury, PCBs, and dioxins – the three main pollutants found in fish caught in the US – consumers are growing concerned. It’s ironic that although we are encouraged to include fish in our diets because it promotes good health, we are also advised not to eat too much of it because it could be bad for us! So, it’s probably a good idea to no longer rely on fish alone as a viable source of Omega-3s in order to promote and maintain general health. Fish oil supplements, therefore, may be preferable to fish consumption as a dietary guideline for the general population and as a therapeutic source of omega-3 fatty acids.

While there is no guarantee that the fish you eat is free of contaminants, what about the safety of omega-3 fish oil supplements? Well, they seem to be safe. Recent studies substantiate that some supplements are safer than eating fish. For example, researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston analyzed five brands of fish oil supplements and found that levels of PCBs and organochlorine pesticides were below the detectable limit in all five brands tested. They noted that, compared with fish oil supplementation, regular consumption of fish from the Great Lakes would expose humans to at least 70 times more PCBs and 120 times more OC pesticides. Clearly, a quality omega-3 fish oil supplement could be the preferred means to get your daily omega-3s. But, which one?
